Could you see the italics in the previous entry? Oh, good. Not because I worry about my computer, but because I want to explain why I used them. When you refer to a word as a word, you underline or italicize it so that people know you mean the word as a word and not as what that word indicates.
For example, Datum is the Latin word for fact. That the language has different endings for words is a Latin fact.
