Luckily, I studied Latin. Datum is the Latin word for fact. The plural is data. English makes nouns plural by adding “s.” Latin adds an “a.” This is why editors will tell you that data are plural (though the dictionary now claims using data as a single noun is acceptable). It also explains some other situations I will cover later in later posts.
