An Open Letter to Mark Zuckerberg

Dear Mr. Zuckerberg:

I write to you because I know you were a staunch defender of inclusive speech. Your recent choice to include on your website even known lies and hate speech marked you as a leader there. In that vein, I was wondering if you might consider a new emoji for all the stuff that’s going down right now? I was thinking along the lines of maybe a less bright face (not all of your site users have skin the color of a manic cartoon banana) all at once sad, caring, angry, and maybe not haha laughing but aware of the irony of protesting police violence and being met with police violence, while also confused trying to figure out WTF Boogaloo wants (and if you figure out that, could you tell Boogaloo?), and wondering if anyone cares that they are still out of work and can’t pay rent or buy much food and their friends are in jobs that expose them to COVID and wondering is COVID still a thing? (oh, the emoji should probably wear a mask; your programmers can remove it after the crisis), and if capitalism can leave so many so vulnerable in so “tiny” an amount of time, is it really what the emoji wants to go back to anyway—something along those lines? Anyway, I know that you, as a champion of inclusive speech, would want for your site a single emoji that encompasses so many of the important issues of our day. That would help keep the amount of words written about them to a minimum so that sponsors’ ads would be more prominent, which I know you’re all for.

Thanks for your consideration.
