Why do editors tell me different things in what seems to be the same situation?

Editors see things that you don’t.  They know how language works and what rules govern its use.  And those rules vary.  Sometimes to communicate what you want as clearly as possible, an editor has to make sure the rules are followed.  Barring that, they decide which rules to bend to make the meaning clearer for the reader
I start by asking authors two simple questions.  (1) What do you want to communicate?  (2) Who is your audience?
