Parentheses and brackets: cups before saucers

When writing phrases that are side remarks to the main point of a sentence, always start with parentheses first and then alternate with brackets (in general [in math, sometimes brackets have to come first if internal parentheses are meant as a mathematical notation (rather than grammatical)]).
How to remember: cups before saucers. Cups have to sit on saucers. Parentheses cup () any flat saucers [].
